KATE SYLVESTER

Kate Sylvester is one of New Zealand's most well-established and well-respected fashion designers. She is best known for her immaculate tailoring and attention to detail as well as her often-quirky references. For her latest collection, please see the below press release:

Black Roses…
to Black Flag anarchists…
to international saboteurs…
to ballet dancers…
to black swans…

Such is the evolution of a collection.
These are the intriguing elements that led to Black Swan, Kate Sylvester’s most sculptural, feminine and mysterious winter collection yet.

The Holy Grail for flower breeders is the colour black. In their quest for this seemingly impossible tone, breeders have created a gorgeous palette of deepest cherries, grapes, purples and blues and romance and mythology has grown around the iconic images of the black delia and the black rose.

The mythology of the black swan is equally intriguing. The belief was that ‘all swans are white’ until in the 17th century black swans were discovered in Australia. The term ‘black swan’ evolved into a reference for perceived impossibility actually coming to pass (recently culminating in the ‘black swan’ theory in economics).

Kate Sylvester’s challenge this season was to create a collection as mysterious, evocative and powerful as these two iconic symbols.

The black rose is a symbol for the anarchist movement and it is here that the dark roots of this collection lye. Enveloping knits, hoods cut through with gold or green eyes and trench coats reference the garb of saboteurs and evoke a dangerous edge, creating contrast to the sculptural femininity of the glorious rose dresses. These include amazing ‘rose bombs’ built of layers and layers of crisp organza petals, and also the ‘fleur’ dress in perfect cocooning rosebud felted wool.

The Leda dress is where the rose morphs into the swan with its layers of soft petals evoking feathers, and swan neck halter complete with jeweled eye. The swan also gracefully wraps around the neckline of the signature t-shirt and the feathery sheen of their plumage inspired ‘drowned petal’ prints in grey and berry, and layers of pleats and waxy texture that encompass the beautiful ‘merula’ dress.

Swans led inevitably to ballet dancers with their grace, strength and mystique. A story of fine eyelet merino evolved in a softer palette of blush, ivory and softest cygnet grey. Arabesque dresses, stirupped leggings and leotards sit alongside a perfectly formed tutu complete with floating black rose skirt and massed layers of gold green tulle.

As always Kate Sylvester’s ongoing obsession of paring couture and tailoring back with sportswear prevails in this collection. So we see the extreme femininity of the rose bombs and fragile lingerie mashed up with boyish dungarees, stirrup leggings and masculine oversize cardigans. As the collection evolved so did a mysterious glamorous personality. Ballet dancer by day, international saboteur by night. She goes by the name of Black Swan.

PARNELL LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Peugeot New Zealand and Continental Car Services in Greenlane are very proud to continue their ongoing sponsorship of the Parnell Lawn Tennis Club in Auckland.

The Parnell Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1872, and is the second oldest tennis club in the world - which gives the club the interesting distinction of having its origins date prior to the date of the first formulation of rules of lawn tennis.

On the 12th of August 1872 it was christened the " The Parnell Croquet Club".

The Seasons Subscription was set at half a guinea and only three rules applied:

Visitors were to be admitted only once
Children under 15 were not allowed.
"All dogs would be hunted off the field or the owner fined one guinea."

The Club finally came to incorporate tennis in its name in 1898 and over the past 108 years the club has grown into a prestigious and well known site in New Zealand.
